Downgrade iOS 4.0.2 To 4.0.1 iPhone 4, 3GS Without Saved SHSH Blobs

Apple has released iOS 4.0.2 to fix the PDF exploit used by JailbreakMe 2.0 star, the ultimate jailbreak for all devices on iOS 4/iOS 4.0.1 or iPad 3.2.1.  Those of you who have upgraded to iOS 4.0.2 accidentally or had bought a new device which came with it, check our articles on how to jailbreak iOS 4.0.2 on iPhone 3G using Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 and jailbreak iOS 4.0.2 on  iPhone 3GS using PwnageTool (unofficial).

If you are an iPhone 4 user, then you are left with no way to jailbreak and unlock iOS 4.0.2. Your only choice at this time is to downgrade iOS 4.0.2 to iOS 4.0.1 using your saved SHSH blobs. In case you are one of those who forgot to save your SHSH blobs or lost them, then here is some news for you. A guy by the name UndeadRevolution has posted a guide on PwnMyI Forum on how to downgrade iOS 4.0.2 to 4.0.1 without having your SHSH blobs saved.

Disclaimer: We have not tested this method, and also have no confirmation so far of it’s success. Proceed at your own discretion. We are not responsible in case of any damage to your device.

Those Who Saved SHSH Blobs on Cydia, jump to this article on how to downgrade iOS 4.0.2 to iOS 4.0.1, 4 on iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G and iPod Touch 3G, 2G.

Here are the steps to downgrade iOS 4.0.2 to iOS 4.0.1 without SHSH blobs

1. Download iOS 4.0.1 IPSW and iOS 4.0.2 IPSW files (links at bottom).

2. Rename the file as .zip and then extract it’s contents using WinRAR to your desktop.

3. Open buildmanifest.plist and restore.plist files using a text editor.

4. Search and replace the string 8A306 with 8A400 through out the documents. Save both the files.

5. Now open iOS 4.0.2 IPSW file using WinRAR or WinZip. You should be able to double click and open it if you have either of the utilities installed. Do not extract it’s contents, simply open it.

6. Copy all files from iOS 4.0.1 folder and drag and drop them into iOS 4.0.2 file opened in WinRAR.

7. Delete all .dmg files with 002 at the end. This leaves only those dmg files with 001.

8. Save the iOS 4.0.2 file in WinRAR and change back it’s file extension to IPSW.

9. Open the hosts file on your Computer and add this line at the end.

74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Refer to our article on how to block websites using hosts file if you are having trouble finding it on your PC.

downgrade-ios-4.0.2-4.0.1-without-shsh-blobs

9. Put your iPhone into DFU mode.

Plug in your iPhone to your Computer and turn the device off. With iTunes running, hold down the Power and Home buttons for around 10 seconds. First release the Power button, still holding the Home button. Wait till your Computer shows up a new USB device.

Now open iTunes and let it restore your iPhone to the modified firmware.

That’s it. You should now be able to go ahead and jailbreak and then unlock your iPhone.

Have you tried this method and is it working? Let us know in the comments.

I’ve done it many times with my iPhone 4 with shipping FW 4.0.2!
    But I didn’t work !

    I did on Windows 7, iTune 9.2.1

  2. max

This method does not work, the guy who did it first didnt know he had shsh blobs saved so it worked for him just because of that. This will not work with new IPHONE 4 4.0.2 . FAIL

  3. Steve Jobbzzz

OR, you could put it in DFU, download the file, and use Shift+Click ‘Restore’ (PC) or Option+Click ‘Restore’ (MacOS X) to manually select that as your restore file.

“OR, you could put it in DFU, download the file, and use Shift+Click ‘Restore’ (PC) or Option+Click ‘Restore’ (MacOS X) to manually select that as your restore file.”

    ******This worrked for me!!!!!!********
Ok. I never usually comment but i feel impelled to help since in the past i gained so much from others! My iphone 3gs was never ever jb or backedup

    1. I dont know how but somehow get ur 3gs to to be in recovery mode.

    2. JUST RENAME THE 4.0.1 file to be the same as the as the 4.0.2 ipsw file. Dont copy files or replace files or edit files. Just change the name of the 4.0.1 file to be 4.0.2 file. Copy and paste the whole name to make it easier.

    3. Change the host file as u would like everyone else to the cydia srvers. Look above and u will see instructions.

    4. Itunes will tell u that u are in recovery mode. Hold down option or alt and click on restore. You will then select the file you just renamed.

    5. It will ask you if you want to restore 4.0.1 NOT 4.0.2. I know you renamed it but it will display 4.0.1. Just say yes
since this what you want anyway.

    6. It should restore without a problem and the last few 20% takes longer for some reason.

    7. For me after it restored it still went to recoverey mode but i used blackra1n to get out of it. If you have a better way do it. My other friends didnt go into recovery mode after the restore SO DONT FREAK OUT when it says connect to itunes aftere the recovery.

8 voila u will be in 4.0.1 and jailbreame.com that 3gs. Not tried on ip4 so dont ask me.

Please comment and let us know if this worked!

    • Johnson

That’s because you’ve saved your SHSH blobs before. NOTHING will work. I bet as soon as 4.1 is released (September 8th), Comex, and the jailbreak team will have a jailbreak out for it ASAP. But for now… we wait and suffer :( Next time, we all should remember to SAVE OUR SHSH BLOBS!!!! SAVE THEM IF YOU’RE ON 4.0.1 NOW! SAVE THEM!!

      • Chetan Chimate

Do you know when comex and the jailbreak team gonna launch jailbreak for 4.1 on iphone 4? How should I keep track of it? It’s very difficult to find that out because of so many misleading websites, videos and blogs.

      • ith

You are incorrect, Johnson. I have a brand new iPhone that has never been jailbroken. I upgraded to iOS 4.3 today and then as a test put my uPhone in DFU mode, launched iTunes, did the Option + Click Restore, selected the official 4.2.1 iOS ipsw restore package and it put the correct version on. This method DOES work with iPhones that are NOT 4 (so 2g, 3g, 3gs).

    • Beat

DOES NOT WORK ON IPHONE 4 – out of the box !!!!!

    • darryl

I tried to add the 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com at the end of the host file but notepad would not let me save, and microsoft word opened it as a read-only file. how do i add it in?

    • Nom

Yes for 3gs you way works, does not need the messing about with ipsw files, just use the published 4.0.1 file.

      Cheers

JESUS CHRIST! I have an iPOD Touch 2G (MC) and had tried everything to downgrade to 4.0 ….

I tried your rename trick … and it seems to be working!

  16. darryl

    IT WORKED.

I’ve never comment on anything before but because of emnasty i felt the same need to do so.

i tried this for 2 days putting 10+ hours into trying to downgrade from youtube to google to everything else.

when i first tried it didnt work because i wasnt able to edit my host file because it was a read only file so i went to properties and adjusted it so i was allowed to edit it.

then i added in those number we were supposed to and tried to restore and still didnt work.

but then i noticed that the information in my host file was different than teh picture about so i added in the two “#” signs and pressed tab to add spacing to make my host file look exactly the same way as it did in the picture.

and now 3 hours laters its finally downgraded.

    thanks to amnasty

  17. Arbor

    Enmity You made this work.
I have been trying to downgrade 2 iphone 3gs for a long time with no results. the method posted by Enmity WORKS. Make sure you also follow darryls instuctions on setting uo your host file.
Thanks so much for helping others.

  18. usatech

after trying severaltime it is work great for my 3gs. it is unlocked now. and i didnt have my shsh blobs saved. but it doesnt work for iphone 4 don’t even try it.

  19. fissull

i am going to try this on my iphone 4 tomorrow. if it works or not, i will let knw u. accidently my iphone 4 was upgraded to 4.0.2.

  20. Julio

    My conclusion is:
iPhone 3Gs – it always works.
iPhone 4 – it works only with SHSH saved.
    Am I right?

  21. Foxy

iphone 4 : no way without SHSH saved…some times it works becouse my be:

Someone saved your SHSH with that device using TinyUmbrella and the default options
Someone restored that device with Cydia in the hosts pointing to gs.apple.com
Someone jailbroke the device and pressed ‘Make my life easier’

by changing the host file all what will happen is it will look for your SHSH automaticly when you go with restore

    Good luck 4 all

    Foxy

  22. Stan

Hey guys! IT WORKED for me!!

I got a 3g ipod Touch i upgraded it to 4.0.2 from 3.1.3 then try the instructions of Enmity..

edited the Host file in the c-windows-system32-drivers-etc..

    renamed the 4.0.1.ispw (iPod3,1_4.0_8A293_Restore) to (iPod3,1_4.0.2_8A400_Restore)

    then run tinyumbrella..

then (shift+restore) and choose the renamed (4.0 firmware)

    then it just restore…

    thanks!! :)

it been a great help.. now im going to proceed upgrading my firmware from 4.0 to 4.0.1

    then jailbreak it..

  23. chinna

This worked perfectly to me. tried with iPhone 3GS 32GB, iTunes 10, WINRAR, in windows 7 ultimaate. Follow the steps exactly and it is done.

I am sure I dont have any SHSH blobs saved ever. And the phone is on new bootrom.

Only problem I faced at adding line (step 9) in Hosts file and saving. It is not saving even opened as administrator. So I copied whole file to desktop and added and saved and copied back the file at same location. (c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc). now it asked permission to replace and it is done.

Thank you very much to the author and who posted at this site with the step by step guide.

    • bollo

or you can try these steps (Windows 7 / Vista):
-hit the start button—>search program–>type “cmd”
-choose cmd, right-click on it and choose run as administrator
      -type in cmd window :
      C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\
      -then type:
      edit host
and the window of cmd will be turned to edit mode (blue background).
-type 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com at the bottom of it.
-press ctrl+S or alt+F+S and Enter key (do not choose “save as”!!)

      and DONE!

  24. bollo

it works on my iPhone 3GS!! Thank you!! i’ll repost it on my blog!

  25. ben

It’s work for 3Gs only (w or w/o shsh); iPhone 4 w/o shsh from cidya will be failed with 3194 error message

  26. Scott

This downgrade worked for me on a 3GS iphone with 4.0.2 and no SHSH saved. This link will help those using a mac:

    machackpc.com/iphone/3g/downgrade-your-iphone-from-ios-4-0-2-to-ios-4-0-1ios-4-without-shsh-blob-mac/

Quick question for those more advanced with this process. After changing the host and recovering to 4.0.1, should the host file be changed back? And if so any information or instruction would be greatly appreciated. Would deleting the last line the same way I added work? I assume so, just want to make sure I should change it back. Thanks all and good luck.

    • dkszone

      @Scott

Yes you can simply delete the added line from hosts file and save it.

  27. [I.K.]

    It worked super easy!

Thanks for the post. By the way, Enmity is right, he found a short cut by simply renaming the software installation files.

I did it on Mac for my iPhone 3GS.

Here is what I did exactly:

    1. Open the hosts file on your Computer and add this line at the end.

    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

    Step 1 – Open the Terminal.app

Either by start typing Terminal on the Spotlight, or by going into Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal.

Step 2 – Open the hosts file

Open the hosts by typing on the Terminal that you have just opened:
    $ sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
Type your user password when prompted.

Step 3 – Edit the hosts file

The hosts file contains some comments (lines starting with the # symbol), as well as some default hostname mappings (e.g. 127.0.0.1 – localhost). Simply append your new mappings underneath the default ones. Or edit one of the default values if you know what you are doing! You can navigate the file using the arrow keys.

Step 4 – Save the hosts file

When done editing the hosts file, press control-o to save the file. Press enter on the filename prompt, and control-x to exit the editor.

Step 5 – Flush the DNS cache

On Leopard you can issue a simple Terminal command to flush the DNS cache, and have your host file changes to take immediate effect:
    $ dscacheutil -flushcache

In the end it should look like this:

    ##
    # Host Database
    #
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    ##
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

    2. Hold down ‘Option’ key and click on ‘Restore’ and select iPhone2,1_4.0.2_8A400_Restore.ipsw file (it is actually 4.0.1, NOT 4.0.2).

    3. Let it install and reboot itself.

    4. Done!

Thanks for the help, guys, highly appreciated!

  28. AHiPhone

Hi — I’m about to try enmity and IK’s hack and I had a question regarding the recent release of version 4.1. When I rename the 4.01 file to “trick” the system, do I now have to rename it to 4.1 rather than 4.02 as enmity suggests? A further question to IK — IK, in your method, does one need to rename at all or can I just direct the alt/restore (using a mac) direct to the 4.01 file I downloaded from iclarified (I’m confused by your step 2 — where does the 4.0.2 restore file name come from if not manually renamed by me)?

If it matters, my situation is as follows: I have an iPhone 3GS that I thought was jailbroken and unlocked. My new SIM wasn’t working and someone suggested I restore and start from the beginning. Instead of restoring from iTunes (which would shove 4.02 or 4.1 into the phone) I did a _full_ reset from the phone itself, with no backups (neither on itunes or SHSH). I got the phone into recovery mode and want to reload 4.01 rather than 4.02/4.1. I’m going to use Enmity and IK’s hack to do so, hence the question above.

Thanks to help from anyone who might offer. Total noob here.

  29. Impressed

@Emnity and @IK: It worked! Thank you *so* much!

  30. Jones

    any1 tried it on itouch 3g mc 4.02 ?

  31. Jose

Does Enmity’s work with the newer bootrom on Iphone 3GS? Thanks!

  32. Ben

FYI, I tried Emnity’s method on a phone with 4.1 installed and could not get it downgraded to 4.0.1. Anyone with 4.1 had any luck?

  33. Jon

I tried it like “Enmity” instructed, and works GREAT on 3 of my 3GS phones with 4.0.2 firmware.

And now all my friends who has 3GS firmware 3.0.1 and 4.0.2 wanted me to do the same, but some how it is giving an error.

    Any suggestion?

  34. dont work enmity

im still getting 3194 error ( no authentication from apple) even though i edited the hosts file perfectly? i also use the proper firmwire, does anyone know wth im doing wrong?

  35. M

    error 3194 on my 3gs 4.0.2 :(

  36. M

After trying a couple more times it finally worked you have to restart the computer after changing the hosts file . :)

  37. dont work enmity

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THE HELL IM STILL GETTING 3914 ERROR ( AUTHENTICATION ERROR) i have edited the host file perfectly restarted, TRIED THIS ON MULTIPLE PCs WTF AM I DOING WRONG? ANYONE? im about to sell my iphone since its locked to another carrier.

hey guys i have iphone 4g with ios 4.1 and want to downgrade or jailbrake it i don’t have any shsh blob so please help me

    • dkszone

      @P
Currently iPhone 4 does not have a jailbreak tool, but soon there will be one.
We will keep you posted when the release happens.

  39. Neolo

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WORKS!!!! I just renamed IPSW and I downgraded from lasted 4.1 to 4.0.1!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A STUPID AND SIMPLE WAY!!!! LOL My device Iphone 3gs 32gb new bootrom never jailbroken/unloked.

  40. Neolo

People, who stucked on 4.1 like me, use follow instructions for downgrade to whatever version you want(Iphone 3gs new bootrom):
thanks Enmity, go ahead and rename your 4.0.1 ipsw to 4.1. Modify hosts file and start restore via itunes, during process you will get ERROR 1015, it’s OK just replug iphone in PC and run TinyUmbrella v4.1.4 and press “Kick out of recovery mode”. BOoM, iphone will reboot, check your current version now – IT’S 4.0.1!!!

  41. Neolo

But there is another problem – baseband version 5.14.02 on a ios 4.0.1. Can’t unlock it, just no network and thats it. Any solution how to downgrade this sucks?

  42. Neolo

If u have auth error, try with or without hosts file modified. For me it works in both cases.

    • haris

Hi dear how did u do that??? what is you phone??? 3g or 3gs??? what is you itunes version??? thanks

  43. Jonno18

Did you do it the same way as amnity or as the post initially wants you to?

  44. haris

    @Neolo
Hi dear how did u do that??? what is you phone??? 3g or 3gs??? what is you itunes version??? thanks

  45. Neolo

As people said before. Just renamed IPSW with new name and started restoring. In a middle of restoring got error but it’s OK, use tinyumbrella to boot iphone in normal mode. That’s it. But problem with baseband still exists, now seeking way to downgrade that trap.

My devise is iPhone 3GS 32GB, iTunes 10, Windows 7

  52. Sam

    Hi,

I have tried the steps. I keep getting an error stating the firmware is not compatible. I have an iphone 3gs

  59. Morgan

THIS DOES NOT WORK, I HAVE SEEN TONS OF POSTS LIKE THIS BUT NONE HAVE PICTURES OF THE ACTUAL DEVICE BEFOIRE AND AFTER . I TRIED AND TRIED AND DOES NOT WORK, THIS METHOD IS A WASTE OF TIME AND FAKE. I HAVE A 3GS ON 4.0.2 I WANT TO DOWNGRADE TO ANYTHING AND CANNOT. ITS BEST JUST TO WAIT FOR GREENPOISON OR A NEW JAILBREAK. YOU PEOPLE WHO RUN THIS BLOG, WHY WONT U COME UP WITH A SOLUTION?? DO SOMETHING!!

  60. Scott

Unfortunately for you with a 3gs running 4.0.2, the error is not the steps it is an error on the user’s part. I successfully downgraded and then jailbroken and unlocked several 3gs, 3g phones. You are correct in that it will not work for the 4g phone as of yet as the firmware is not able to be downgraded for that particular phone as of yet. I was able to do this process on both a mac and a pc. There are indeed slight differences for both. If you need help please contact me at Scottjgetzdaplay@aol.com

i dont think so, its coz this 3gs i own now, has NEVER been jailbroken and if you have never saved your shsh blobs u cannot downgrade, youre stuck until the next jailbreak!! its that simple. if anyone thinks theyre able to downgrade from 4.0.2 to anything lower its bullsh**, i know it and any person in the know knows it. if you are so smart Scotty, put up your tutorial here so we can see evidence of it. I m not being unthankful for your help but c’mon really, if its so easy, we wouldnt have miilions of posts on the net like these.Im stuck on 4.0.2 until a jb for 4.1 is out

  61. Scott

You are correct in the fact that you aren’t being unthankful, you are just wrong in the fact that it is impossible. It may not be easy, but it is definitely possible. You might have to submit to the fact that the instructions aren’t faulty, yet its the person trying to use them. I too had a 3gs, without shsh blobs and without too much incredible effort downgraded my phone from 4.0.2 to 4.0.1. Perhaps you aren’t being thorough enough. I know this, because if you were, you would have seen I already have had posted my tutorial over a month ago. Look through the posts and you will find it. By simply altering your host server files, blocking itunes from contacting apple, then renaming your ipsw 4.0.1 to 4.0.2 and then manually choosing said file during itunes restore, you will then be able to jailbreak and subsequently unlock your phone. Any other advise I will be charging for. Thank you come again haha.

Hey id like to check out your post.can u post the link here if that isnt much trouble? Hey if u charge i dont mind if u feel so also post payment instructions because if u achieved this indeed its a first! Congrats!!

It is not possible without saved shsh blobs; Morgan is correct. Those who have been able to hack their 3GS may have saved their blobs unknowingly in the past, or their iPhone’s previous owners may have done it. Please don’t fall for people who charge money and claim to do it. Google is your best friend.

Dont despair if u have a new iDevice on 4.0.2 or 4.1 just wait for Greenp0ison to be released and then u’ll have a reliable way to jailbreak! Heres the link and keep me posted if any of u guys manage to jb when it comes out!! quickpwn.com/greenpois0n-download

This makes no sense to people who know how it works.
    1. Renaming the IPSW doesn’t make any difference. Itunes doesn’t care what the name of the file is, it makes NO dfference, you can call it crap.ipsw, and it will do exactly the same thing.
    2. If you don’t have your blobs saved, there is no reason to edit the host file. Editing the host file only allows Cydia to approve the firmware using your saved blobs, nothing more.
The people that succeeded had saved blobs and didn’t know it.
    Good luck.
