How To Downgrade iOS 4.1 To iOS 4.0.x iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G
Have you fallen prey to iTunes’ innocent looking update message and unknowingly upgraded to iOS 4.1 ? Don’t worry, as there is a way to downgrade toiOS 4.0.1 (which you can jailbreak using JailbreakMe 2.0), oriOS 4.0.2 (redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 can jailbreak iPhone 3G, PwnageTool for iPhone 3GS), or the iOS 4 final version. But wait… have you saved your SHSH blobs earlier?
Yes, you can only downgrade iOS 4.1 if you have already saved your SHSH blobs (ECID SHSH) either locally (using TinyUmbrella) or on Cydia’s servers. If you haven’t yet updated your firmware and are just looking for more information, then follow this guide to save your SHSH blobs and also preserve unlock baseband before you upgrade to iOS 4.1.
For the rest of you who have already updated your firmware here is how you can downgrade it to iOS 4.0.1 or any other earlier version (iOS 4.0.2, iOS 4, iOS 3.1.3/3.1.2) provided you have SHSH blobs saved for that firmware on your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or 3G.
1. Download iOS 4.0.x firmware IPSW file to your Computer.
2. Edit and save your system’s hosts file, adding the following line:
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
Here is how you can
What you are in fact doing by changing the hosts file is to trick iTunes into believing that it is communicating with Apple’s servers, while it’s actually talking to Saurik’s server, where your SHSH blobs are saved.
3. Now restore your device to the older firmware you downloaded in step 1. For doing this, open iTunes, and click SHIFT (ALT for OSX) + Restore.
4. Browse and select the IPSW file when prompted by iTunes. Let iTunes restore your iPhone to the selected iOS 4.0.x firmware.
5. After installation, you may come across errors 1015, 1013, or 1011 unable to get out of recovery errors.
6. Here is how you can exit recovery mode using RecBoot. Or you could also use TinyUmbrella’s Kick Device Out Of Recovery’.
That’s it. When your iPhone restarts, you will find it on an older firmware. You can now go ahead and jailbreak it, even unlock it with Ultrasn0w 1.1-1 if you have already preserved baseband 1.59.00.

omg… i had my jailbroken… but it got messed up when i downloaded springvibe… kept showing a pop up where i could not access my phone… so i deleted mobilesubstrate which made it worst.. it was stuck on the apple logo… so i restored it and i had to use the 4.1 update… but when i did what u said on this…. it took me a while but i was patient… and it worked…. thank you for posting this… youve been a big help..

The steps worked for me but i had to kick my phone out of recovery when it was stuck on the sync with itunes screen but it downgraded from 4.1 back to 4.0.1 so im happy try what i did
My iPhone 3GS was jail broken but it froze up so I put it in restore mode. It restored and updated itself with iTunes to 4.1. And now I can’t jailbreak and I didn’t save my shsh. Am I out of luck to downgrade or jailbreak

See this post for how to downgrade iOS 4.1 to 4.0.x without SHSH blobs. Some guys have had it working.
my 3g was unlocked, but i accidently updated it to 4.1, the newest FW out from apple. as a result, its compeltely locked now. apparently there are no tools out right now to jailbreak or unlock this. also, i dont have shsh blobs saved for the previous fw, so downgrading is (from what i know) not possible. the tool for the new 4.1 fw, greenpoison, is currently under development too… is there any way i can downgrade, jailbreak and unlock my 3g? id be grateful if you could help me out… otherwise its a waste of a phone!

Yes you are right. It is not possible to downgrade without SHSH blobs saved for the previous firmware.
Some people have claimed success in downgrading iOS 4.0.2 to iOS 4.0.1 without SHSH blobs saved, but this method has not been tested on iOS 4.1. Proceed with caution!
If you had done some research before upgrading to iOS 4.1, then you could have updated to iOS 4.1 without baseband upgrade, thus preserving your unlock.

Unlock iOS 4.1: Currently not possible if your baseband is upgraded, as Ultrasn0w 1.1.-1 does not yet support baseband 2.10.04
Don’t give up, as there might be an update to Ultrasn0w in the coming days to include the latest baseband upgrade.
I keep trying to do this but I always get the following message from iTunes:
“Your device is not eligible for this upgrade”
Does that mean the Itunes 10 doesn’t support the downgrade? Should I just wait for the jailbreak for 4.1 or is there another solution that I’m missing?

Did you save your SHSH blobs for iOS 4.0.x firmware? You come across this error when you don’t have ECID SHSH saved.
When Apple stops signing a firmware, iTunes does not allow you to restore to that firmware.

No. ECID SHSH is unique to every device.
Then i can use someone elses SHSH blobs to downgrade????

Yes, there is hope. A new tool by the name Greenp0ison is in the works, this is an all-device jailbreak including iPhone 4.
No ETA has yet been given.

So, do you mean that your unlockable baseband of 5.13.04 was preserved or that the baseband was updated to the unlockable one?

i had iphone 3gs jailbroken and unlocked using jailbreakme. used the “make my life easier” button in cydia back then.
tried to update to 4.1 using pwnage. as i had the new bootrom it didn’t work and now i have ios 4.1 on it jailbroken using GP. unfortunately no unlock possible. is it somehow possible to return back to 3.1.3 somehow using the information that should be backed up and then unlock? or is there no chance to do so because of the new baseband which can´t be taken back? thank you

Downgrading will not help you with unlock as your baseband is already updated (because you used GreenPois0n which does not preserve baseband).
You will just have to wait and watch for the new baseband unlock that may come after iOS 4.2 release.

I did this with my iPhone 3G, and everything was going perfect until my laptop died. So, I plugged in the laptop, and turned the iPhone off and back on while in restore mode. It all over started restoring, got to where it was when the laptop died, and then it stopped. Please help.

i just got an iphone 3gs from my relative,before giving it to me he did Reset through the phone to delete all his previous data that was present on it…it was on 4.0.1 os jailbroken and unlocked…after reset when it asked to reboot it doesnt,only an apple logo comes and i can enter into dfu mode by pressing home and power button for ten seconds…

You can restore to 4.0.1 firmware, only if your friend saved SHSH for 4.0.1 on his iPhone.
i tried this method i got 3014 error using itunes,guess this means the 4.0.1 shs blobs were not save…what are my possible options??.my 3gs has new bootroom..
i heard snowbreeze 2.2 with baseband preservation will come out soon,could that be useful for updating to 4.2.1 while preserving baseband..i dont mind updating to 4.2.1 its just i dont want to update my baseband to 6.5 to use any carrier…
