UPDATE: Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 To Jailbreak iOS 4 Final Version on iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 2G

Just as we expected, iTunes 9.2 release for Windows is followed by an update to redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta. This iPhone 3G iOS 4 jailbreak tool, which was earlier available only Mac OSX users now supports Windows, albeit currently only for developers with UDID. The latest version of redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 brings in added support to enable battery percentage and verbose boot mode, apart from already available multitasking and homescreen wallpaper options while jailbreaking.

Note for unlockers: Do not use redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta if you rely on a carrier unlock. Since redsn0w requires you to upgrade to iOS 4 GM IPSW, which contains a baseband update. Installing iOS 4 will automatically result in loss of your unlock, and you will have to wait for updates to either blacksn0w or ultrasn0w to unlock your device.

Here are the steps to jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4 using Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5:

1. Download iOS 4 GM for your device. UPDATE iOS 4 final version available for download.

2. Launch redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta (download links given at end), browse and select the IPSW file.

3. At this point, you will be able to choose the jailbreak options, Install Cydia, Verbose boot, Custom boot logo, Custom recovery logo, Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage. Click Next after the desired options are selected.

4.  Follow the directions given by redsn0w and make sure your iPhone is CONNECTED to your computer and POWERED OFF before clicking Next.

5. Now use DFU mode (first hold down the POWER and HOME buttons for a few seconds; later release the POWER button, still holding the HOME button till the installation begins)  to finish the installation.

That’s it. Reboot your iPhone and you now have a jailbroken iPhone 3G on iOS 4.

How To Disable MultiTasking, HomeScreen wallpaper, Verbose Mode, and other settings

For turning off these other settings, re-run redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta. However do not re-install Cydia, so make sure ‘Install Cydia’ option is turned off.

How To Turn Off Battery Percentage

If you want to turn off the battery percentage after jailbreaking, simply go to Settings –> General –> Usage and toggle it off.

You can also disable Battery Percentage similar to the way you turn off other settings by re-running redsn0w 0.9.5.

And I updated to 4.1 through itunes and took that same exact file from itunes folder, so in that sense everything should be ok, just redsnow si not compatible yet :(

  18. Amit

I have iPhone 3GS and upgraded to iOS 4.2 and tried jailbreaking with redsnow. Unfortunately, it has stuck on the apple screen and is not even booting up. It is not even recognized as a device by iTunes. Can anybody please help me. Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

  19. Me

Booting up will require being “tethered” to a computer. That means if you shut down a jailbroken iPhone 3GS, or if it runs out of power, you can only turn it back on by plugging it into a computer.
