How To Jailbreak iOS 4.0.2 iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 2G Using Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5

Apple has fixed the PDF exploit iniOS 4.0.2, thus closing the hole which is used by JailbreakMe to jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3G on iOS 4,iOS 4.0.1 and iPad 3.2.1. You don’t need to upgrade to iOS 4.0.2 and lose your jailbreak and unlock just to fix the security hole. A Cydia app lets you can fix the PDF exploit after jailbreaking with JailbreakMe.

For those of you who have already upgraded to iOS 4.0.2 on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (non MC model), you still have redsn0w to jailbreak your iDevice. Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5, the latest version lets you jailbreak and hacktivate your iPhone 3G on iOS 4.0.2 (if you haven’t already been activated by iTunes).

Here are the steps to jailbreak iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G using Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5:

1. Download iOS 4 (final version) and iOS 4.0.2 (download links at end).

2. Upgrade your firmware to iOS 4.0.2 via iTunes.

3. Launch redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5. Browse and select the iOS 4 final version IPSW file (yes, iOS 4 and not iOS 4.0.2 as you may have expected).

4. In the next screen select all those you want to install, such as Cydia, custom boot logo, custom recovery logo, etc.

In case you are following these steps after you have already jailbroken using redsn0w and only want to install Cydia, then select the ‘Already Pwned’ option.

5. In the next screen, you will be asked to make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to your computer. Click ‘Next’.

6. Put your iPhone in DFU mode, that is hold down POWER button first, then while holding it press the HOME button for a few seconds. Then release the POWER button, but keep holding the HOME button till the installation begins

That’s it. Once your device reboots, you will have a fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch on iOS 4.0.2

Download iOS 4 IPSW (final release)

Download iOS 4.0.2 IPSW

Download Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5

Download iTunes 9.2.1

Unlock iOS 4.0.2

After jailbreaking, you can go ahead and unlock iPhone 3G on iOS 4.0.2 with Ultrasn0w 1.1-1.

the above is a nightmare on windows 7 64 bit and 32bit , i have been trying now for a week with redsnow getting stuck at waiting to reboot , have tried on 2 laptops and 2 different pcs with still no joy have tried all the fixes on the net but im positive it is a USB issue as when trying to install the pcs ping like mad with the usbs turning off and on even tried putting a pre jailbreaked iso 4 in with itunes which sits for about 10 minutes preparing iphone to end with error 1600 after the usbs do their thing.

this won’t work on ALL iPhone 3g devices neither will on ALL iPod touch 2g devices…only on some models, for example – it will only work on iPod touch 2g MC-models

No problems here. Redsn0w worked with out any glitches and my 3G is now jail broken. In addition, ultrasn0w was just as easy to install and I have made my first call using a vodaphone sim card. Skype gave me a warning that it only works on unmodified 3.0 iOS, but it seems to work fine. My iphone is now good for Europe. Thanks to all the developers and dskzone for posting this guide.

One comment on the instructions. They state, “For those of you who have already upgraded to iOS 4.0.2″ and then ask you to download 4.0.2 and update your firmware via itunes. This does not seem logical to me b/c if your are one of “those of you who have already upgraded to iOS 4.0.2″ then you already have 4.0.2 on your iphone.

I did not download 4.0.2, just the 4.0 final version and did not have to do any firmware updates prior to running redsn0w. Perhaps there is some detail I am missing out on but if this is necessary for some users please add some detail on how to update your firmware via itunes, do you have itunes access the specific 4.0.2 file you downloaded? If so how do you do this? Thanks again and I hope these comments where useful.

YEAH !!! it worked !!! my iPhone 3G 4.0.2 is jailbroken and now unlocked again after I accidently upgraded it from 4.0.1 on iTunes. i was sure missing my multitasking, wallpapers, and battery percentage indicator

Since iTunes already upgraded me to 4.0.2 i just downloaded the iOS4 IPSW (final release) and Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 from the link above and it worked!

Now that it was jailbroken i went ahead to my Cydia application and unlocked my iPhone 3G on iOS 4.0.2 with Ultrasn0w 1.1-1

I now am able to use my iphone all over Asia again… tested it with my SingTel, FarEastone, Globe, and Mobifone simcards.

I’m not a tech head and im struggling with step 3. browse and select the iOS 4 final version IPSW file, i downloaded it and it came in a winrar so i extracted it all to desktop and my redsnow doesnt pick up on anything to select? Any help please?

ive tried multiple versions of redsn0w and different downloads for the firmware. redsn0w keeps saying it cant recognize the IPSW. Anyone know what to do to fix this?
