Unable To Recognize Specified IPSW Error In Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta
Some users are coming across an error that says ‘Unable to recognize specified IPSW’ while using redsn0w 0.9.5b5-2 to jailbreak iOS 4. This problem is occurring because the version of redsn0w being used is not compatible with the version of the IPSW file.
Since there have been too many versions of redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 released in quick succession one after the other, and also many are confused between iOS 4 GM and iOS 4 final release, let us clarify these things a bit.
Firstly, you should now download iOS 4 final version for your iPhone or iPod Touch.
Download redsn0w 0.9.5b5-4, the latest version (which fixes the iBooks issue) to jailbreak iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 2G.
Follow the instructions on how to jailbreak iOS 4 iPhone 3G using redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5.

These instructions do not work it still has the message that the ipsw is unrecognised.
Still does not work…
just use redsn0w_win_0.9.5b5-2.zip and it works flawless
Instructions work fine with 0.9.5b5-5 but you have to use to the iTunes downloaded file. You can find it here:
Windows XP:Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
Windows 7: (See hidden folders): C:\Users\( The name of the main profile)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
ispw at itunes location under XP using 0.9.5b5-5 and 0.9.5b5-4 unable to recognize. I am downloading the ispw file manualy to try again.
A293, A306 and iTunes 4.0 and 4.01 custom restore files all do not work, Redsn0w is a typical apple POS, I wish, oh how I wish I’d bought ANDROID instead of this apple crap. I knew back in the days of the MAC at school they were inferior, boy do I know it now!
Obviously, I had tried for iOS2,1_4.08A293, A306 with RedsnOw 095b2,4,5 … all hit ‘unable to … ‘
there are like 5 different kinds of IPSW’s and betas for Redsn0w
i have the 3g and i used
iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw the package number (A293, needs to be verified)
as for redsn0w i used the 5b5-5, it did not work with the 5b5-4
redsn0w_mac_0.9.5b5-5
Update your Iphone 3G with ITunes to Firmware 4.0.2. Than Download this Firmware iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw
Start Redsnow 5b5-5 and browse this Firmware iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw and make your jailbreak. After Jailbreak is your Iphone Jailbroken an your Firmware is 4.0.2
It works
@ drej tried your suggestion of 8A293 with no luck. still says unable to recongnize specified IPSW
@Defo do you put files “redsn0w_win_0.9.5b5-5″ and “iPod2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore” in the same folder? I got the msg “Unable to recognize specified IPSW” because I didn’t put them in the same folder.
look that more info in this website

Hope this helps.
@Bana tried putting the redsn0w program into iPod Software Updates but still no luck. what redsn0w version are u using? mine is redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 is it? apparently Drej is able to jailbreak his with the same version as mine!
@Defo You have to put the ipsw file into the redsn0w folder, and then browse the file when prompted. I’ve been reading about this all week long now for hours, and I came across @Bana post and I FINALLY got redsn0w to recognize the firmware…major step on XP.
I just bought a 3G iPhone hoping I could Jailbreak/unlock it. I’m getting the same error message.
Version 4.0.2 (8A400)
Carrier AT&T 7.0 (original SIM)
Model MB702LL
Modem Firmware 05.13.04
redsn0w_win_0.9.5b5-5
iTunes version 10
iPhone backup (33kb): iPhone1,2_4.08A293_Restore
uTorrent downloaded (299,313kb): iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore
I’m downloading the (292MB) file iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw you posted a link to right now, but it takes me about 2 hours.
w00t! Your copy of the iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw file did the job! Now to unlock it….
@Toimu
Unlock it with Ultrasn0w
still no luck :*( thats sad. just placed my ipsw in my redsnow folder tgt with the program README credits and license but nope.. still unable to recognise
Thanks……But didnt work out for me……. Still the same erroe
this is all crap. All the “fixes” listed in the comments and all the “suggestions” found on the internet haven’t made the proclaimed “jailbreak” a reality. I think redsn0w is sh** and wouldnt recommend this to anyone, ever. REDICULOUS!!! NOT WORTH ANYONE’S TIME AT ALL! “Unable to recognize”, my ass. Followed all instructions and tips to the T, still not go. Time of my life that I can NEVER get back- this is worse than sitting through the movie “Borat”
@nate
Why don’t you try GreenPois0n? We have used this tool and it worked for us.
omg you have to kid methis dont works
i got mine to work by moving the file to my pictures instead of my desktop finally
and using the 0.9.4
