How To Update iPhone 4 To iOS 4.1 Without Upgrading Baseband 1.59.00 To 2.10.04
Apple has today released iOS 4.1 for iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, and iPod Touch 2G, 3G, with iOS 4.1 for iPod Touch 4G being released much earlier. This latest firmware update brings in some cool features such as Game Center, HDR photography, and HD video uploading to YouTube does not yet have a confirmed jailbreak tool.
Upgrade To iOS 4.1 – Jailbreak And Unlock Possibilities
For all those who are unable to resist from upgrading their firmware to iOS 4.1, here is all the information you need to know about iOS 4.1 jailbreak and unlock. As of now there is no confirmed jailbreak for iOS 4.1. The last firmware that has a jailbreak is iOS 4.0.1, and after that Apple has fixed the PDF exploit in iOS 4.0.2, thus making JailbreakMe 2.0 Star all device jailbreak non-functional.
Those who saved their SHSH blobs via Cydia can easily downgrade iOS 4.0.2 to iOS 4.0.1. Not saved your ECID SHSH or got a brand new iPhone 4? Follow this guide to downgrade iOS 4.0.2 to iOS 4.0.1 without SHSH blobs, which some users are claiming success.
iPhone 3G and 3GS users on iOS 4.0.2 have some respite in Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 and PwnageTool, with a later unlocking using Ultrasn0w 1.1. However it needs to be checked if these tools still work for iOS 4.1.
Save SHSH Blobs Using TinyUmbrella Now!
First of all, save your SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella (see steps below) on your current jailbroken firmware. If you want to later downgrade your firmware, say to iOS 4.0.1 or iOS 4 then you need to have SHSH blobs saved.
1. Download TinyUmbrella (links at bottom) for Windows, Linux, or Mac OSX (links at bottom). Mac users, drag drop the DMG file to your desktop or applications folder, or you will encounter repeated password prompts.
2. Run the application. If Windows Firewall asks for confirmation, then click ‘Allow access’.
3. Have iTunes installed on your PC and running.
4. Connect your device (iPhone 4, 3GS/3G, iPod Touch 4G/3G/2G, iPad) and wait for TinyUmbrella detect it.
5. Then click on ‘Save My SHSH’ button.
That’s it. TinyUmbrella will grab your device’s ECID SHSH and save it locally as well as generate a ticket to for saving to Cydia.
iOS 4.1 Baseband Update
Now here is something really important you should know. iOS 4.1 brings in a baseband update. The new baseband 2.10.04 is not yet supported by Ultrasn0w 1.1-1. This means that you cannot unlock your device even when a new jailbreak is released in the coming days for iOS 4.1, if your baseband is upgraded (which will be if you update to iOS 4.1). Is there a way to upgrade to iOS 4.1 without updating to baseband 2.10.04? Luckily for us, the answer is yes.
How To Stop Baseband Update 2.10.04 And Preserve Current Baseband On iPhone 4
!Important: This method is for iPhone 4 ONLY. It does not work on iPhone 3GS or 3G.
Thanks to the latest version of TinyUmbrella with iOS 4.1 support, you can upgrade your firmware without upgrading the baseband (iPhone 4 only). Here is how you can preserve your baseband while updating to iOS 4.1:
1. Download the latest version of TinyUmbrella 4.1.3 (download links at end).
2. Run TinyUmbrella. Allow access if Windows Firewall asks for confirmation.
3. Start TSS server in TinyUmbrella. If iTunes is running, then this will be killed.

4. Launch iTunes, connect your device to your Computer and then click SHIFT (ALT on Mac) + ‘Restore’ in iTunes (not the Update button). You will get a 3002 error if you have clicked the Update button instead of Restore.
5. Browse and select the iOS 4.1 IPSW file for your device and let iTunes restore to this firmware.
6. iTunes should throw up error 1004, ‘Baseband Update failed’. Or else you know it’s a failure!
7. Now you need to exit recovery mode in iTunes. Click on ‘Kick device out of recovery mode’ in TinyUmbrella.
This is it! Once your iPhone 4 restarts, you will find it on iOS 4.1 with the older 1.59.00 baseband !

After restoring … the unlock will remain?
doesnt work for iphone 3g…dont try
hey! if i do this and i depend on ultrasnow what will happen? i get ios 4.1 working with ultrasnow but no cydia?
thanks! please help me, i am about to do it and dont know what will happen :-S
thanks, worked like a charm for me on iphone 3g
I followed the instruction meticulously. Guess what? It worked fine!
I did lose Cydia, even though the baseband is intact and my phone is roaming on Fuzionmobile.com How do I restore Cydia? I’d like to add some features and some of the phone software unavailable through iTunes.
Oh, I should have been more clean. I did this on an unlocked 3g. The upgrade iOS 4.1 works extremely well. My phone was previously slow and unresponsive, it is like a new phone now!
Will Cydia slow it down again?
@Czarembo
Your phone speeded up because of the improvements in iOS 4.1. No, Cydia will not slow it down.
Yeah, just got it done, I can see that real improve a lot on my 3g, but now the issue is how to install the Cydia back to the phone?? Help.
TRIED THIS ON THREE DIFFERENT 3G’S, NOW ALL THREE ARE LOCKED. FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS EXACTLY AND AS SOON AS IT STARTS RESTORING TU SAYS I DEVICE DISCONNECTED. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. IVE GOT 3 LOCKED PHONES NOW
ANY IDEAS????
You did not read it carefully, it’s TOO LATE NOW…You baseband is probably been upgraded to the latest version associating with 3GS.
Unlike Iphone 4 where there is a way to maintain old baseband…but there’s IS NO current METHOD of maintaining the baseband for 3GS if CARRIER unlock is needed.
Your hope is to wait for Ultrasn0w for their new release to support new baseband unlock. There is NO turning back for you now….unfortunately….baseband CANNOT be reverted once it is updated to newer version.
hii,i updated my iphone 3g to 4.1 and the baseband got updated..since there is no unlock for 4.1 and insatlled 4.0. ,jailbreaked but cannot unlock what can i do
So I did the process and it worked like a charm on my i4. Now my phone is empty and iTunes is asking if I want to set up as new phone or restore from backup. How do I put everything I once had back on?
Click restore from backup
Will this work on an iPhone 3GS? Can I jailbreak on limera1n and still preserve the old baseband?
Yes. Here is the to jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS with limera1n.
http://www.dkszone.net/how-to-jailbreak-ios-4-1-iphone-4-iphone-3gs-3g-with-limera1n
This is FOR JAILBREAK only, to get to this point, you have to be on 4.1 already, and by that time, the baseband on a 3GS phone already upgraded and no turning back for those who need CARRIER UNLOCK…
There’s currently no way of maintaining baseband for 3GS if you want to go to ios4.1. Therefore if UNLOCK is required, then DO NOT attempt, or you will lost your unlock capability. Yes eventhough you have your SHSH blob saved, but the baseband once updated cannot be REVERTED back. So 3GS users out there, hang on to your temptation for now and wait for a tool which allows you to upgrade without changing the baseband.
Iphone 4 users, you are OK to proceed because using TINY umbrella during restores for ios4.1 CAN prevent baseband upgrade. IMPORTANT, this feature only works for Iphone 4.
So what your saying is this will not work for 3GS users.?
and do you think this new limerain will be able to jailbreak my 3GS thats on 3.1.3 with a new bootrom??
What if my 3gs is oficially unlocked ?? Will this work on an OFFICIALLY UNLOCKED iPhone 3GS New bootrom ??
WTF this is so misleading and a deceit for 3GS users.
It says it keeps your baseband from being updated and claiming you could later use ultrasn0w while on 4.1. How do you expect 3GS users to unlock with ultrasn0w on 4.1 when your phone needs a carrier unlock?
Who else uses ultrasn0w, except those who need a carrier unlock?
DO NOT USE THIS 3GS USERS!!! IT WILL UPDATE YOUR BASEBAND!
So basically the whole 3GS unlock on 4.1 is fake and thanks to you my iphone is now locked on 4.1, with my baseband updated!
Just great.
I have an iphone 4 in 4.0.2 but I have NEVER saved my shsh, can I do it now? or is it too late since the apple isnt signing 4.0.2 anymore (only 4.1)???
when I plug my iphone to tinyumbrella it says that the shsh were saved on 4.1 but im actually on 4.0.2!!! is this good enough to update by this method?
and if I click advanced options and pick 4.0.2 it says that it is too late and that they cant be saved!
PLEASE HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
@Mario
Don’t worry about TinyUmbrella not saving your SHSH for 4.0.2.
Update to iOS 4.1 on your iPhone 4 without upgrading the baseband as described above.
Then you can jailbreak iOS 4.1 iPhone 4 using either Limera1n or GreenPois0n.
After the jailbreak try TinyUmbrella once again to save your SHSH for iOS 4.1.
Wow it worked!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!! I really needed this because I was on 4.0.2 but after installing My3G from cydia I got the screen stucked with the apple logo!! But when I plugged it into iTunes it was like if it were working normally (I could sync and add music and everything but the screen was black with the apple logo, weird) but yeah I still was able to save the shsh and update keeping my old baseband!! Cydia should put a warning sign on that app!! It said “not compatible with 4.1″ but I was on 4.0.2 and it still crashed! I wanted to get “My3G” to use FaceTime!! By any chance do you know if “MiTime” is compatible with 4.1? My friend had that app, he paid like 8 bucks and worked great but he was on 4.0.1
Mario I have an iphone 4 on 4.0.2 and was in your same situation. After following step by step the instructions, the phone stopped installing at about 65% of the process (according to the progress bar on the phone). I leave it installing for about 8 hours and nothing.
Now when I try to install 4.0.2 again it returns an error message 3194. I tried everything installing on both DFU mode or recovery mode.
Please somebody HELP me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS KILLING ME.
you were doing this on a mac? you saved the shsh files before doing the whole process and had java updated?
I have tried using this method to update my iphone4 4.0.2 to 4.1 but when I click shift+restore in itunes it starts to restore but stops with the 3002 error.
No, I am not clicking “update”. Have tried 5 times now.
@ anvendarnamn I’m guessing your on windows since you said “shift+restore”?
I did it on my mac… I did it this way (Maybe you got a friend with a mac? idk?)
- Open tinyumbrellla, connect your iphone and save the shsh (it will tell you that they were saved on 4.1)
- I went to Finder, then I clicked on the upper bar where it says “file edit view go windwow” just click on GO and then select “go to folder”. You have to type /etc/ and you will get a list of files and folders.
Find a file called “Hosts” copy and paste it onto your desktop
- open the hosts file that you have on your desktop, and you will have to delete everything that contains gs.apple.com
for example I found 2 lines like this
12.333.44.555 gs.apple.com
SO yeah delete everthing that has a line with gs.apple.com
after that you can close it and save it! then you need to copy that “new file” to the folder “/end/”
you will need to replace then click authenticate and put your mac password and done
then your ready! open itunes.
then open tiny umbrella and click on “start tss server”
your itunes will be closed automatically
then open itunes (again yeah) and hold “option” and click restore, select 4.1 and restore
(Dont close tinyumbrella, it must be running throughout the whole process)
at the end you will get an error that will leave you in recovery mode
so just close itunes and click on “kick out of recovery mode” in tinyumbrella
your phone will be rebooted, and its done! put an at&t sim card to activate and you can check that it got the old baseband!
I had itunes 10.0.1
and make sure you got Java updated too
afterwords you can jailbreak with greenpois0n in windows!
check out this link! its the READ ME FILE from the tinyumbrella site
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7078752/ReadMe/ReadMe2.pdf
it says that “3002 errors could also come from not being able to modify your hosts file. Please make your hosts file writable as some anti-virus software changes the permissions on that file to read-only. (google is your friend)”
So it would be easier on mac I think!! (i dont know how to change the hosts file on windows)
Thanks mate.. got it working now!
Same issue here? Is there a solution for this?
Error 3002 is when going to a version which is NO longer signed by APPLE. this is resulted in the following.
-Tiny umbrella not running or you do not have SHSH saved on CYDIA or locally.
Watch the video on how to tun Tiny Umbrella properly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpVFoQ5eB4s
Everything Worked Fine For Me. Only Issue Is Now I Cant Send Or Receive Pic Mail. Is This Because The Carrier & Baseband Are Off Or Is It Directly At&t’s Fault?
I am confused. If i use this in an iphone 3gs, the baseband will be upgraded. Is this the same with an iphone 3g? Cause i want to upgrade from IOs 3.12 to IOs 4.1, but i don’t want to upgrade the baseband, since i have an AT&T iphone and i don’t even live in the US.
I jsut pruchased a iphone 4.1.1 brand new Phone . Which tool can i used to jailbreak?
@Ricky
Both GreenPois0n and Limera1n should work for you.
GreenPois0n: http://www.dkszone.net/greenpois0n-supports-ipod-touch-2g-mc-non-mc-models
Limera1n: http://www.dkszone.net/limera1n-mac-os-download
Thanks for the response.
So will these work for 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 as well?
Hi..my iphone4 has been upgraded to iOS 4.1 with the new baseband 02.10.04, and I was wondering if I could just downgrade the baseband back to the older bb 1.59.00. Do I use the method “How To Stop Baseband Update 2.10.04 And Preserve Current Baseband On iPhone 4″ listed above?
Should I just wait for the unlock for the new baseband 02.10.04 to be released? Can someone give me an idea of what I should do?
@ Ricky, 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 does not exist
@ Tony, your out of luck, if you updated your baseband you CANNOT go back, for this method to work you must be in 4.0 or 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 and THEN update to 4.1 with itunes and tinyumbrella running in the background so that you keep your old baseband (1.59.00 only available on previous versions) and still upgrade to 4.1 firmware. Once you update your baseband there is no turning back! Your only hope is to wait, I read an article that says they found a new exploit in 4.2 to unlock (will be released in Nov) soo it should be coming out soon! (3 or 4 weeks i guess, there is no fixed date)
@Tony, @Mario
There is still hope for all unlockers who accidentally updated to new basebands 05.14.04, 2.10.04.

http://www.dkszone.net/iphone-3gs-3g-baseband-unlocker-release-imminent
@Mario: Thank you for the info. Yeah that’s what I thought too, so I’m just going to wait the unlock for baseband 2.10.04 to be released, this is like waiting for an early christmas present hehehe. Once again thank you.
@dkszone: Thank you for all the info and updates you’ve been giving us about all of our idevices and the how tos. I appreciated it.
how about iphone 3gs version 4.1 8B117 modem firmware :05.14.02 It is possible for new release .unlock how can i unlock this
@angelo
Unfortunately there is no unlock for 3gs on baseband 05.14.02. But don’t worry, soon there will be. Maybe in a few weeks.

I have tried to run tinyUmbrella and it can’t run TSS, it shows:
something is wrong.
You don’t have admin privileges or
you have something running on port 80 or
……
Do you how i can run to make it work?
@joe
Are you running TinyUmbrella on Mac?
I tried this with my iphone 3g, but when i restored the error never came up and so i didnt have to kick out of recovery or any of that it just updated to 4.1
I followed the steps exactly so idk what went wrong, but now my baseband is at 5.14.02 is there anyway I can get my firm where down by doing tinyumbrella again or using a custom firmware like from sn0breeze??
@Darron
This method is for iPhone 4 only, it’s clearly mentioned.
Once the baseband is updated, there is now way back.
You will have to wait for an unlock for 5.14.02 baseband, which may be released soon after iOS 4.2 is out.
http://www.dkszone.net/unlock-iphone-4-3gs-baseband-05-14-02-2-10-04-coming-soon
It really should be marked a lot CLEARER this will only preserve the baseband on iPhone 4. I made the same mistake I’m sure many others have and used this update with a 3gs. Now stuck waiting for a 5.14.02 unlock. My only advice to others is
ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT & DONT RUSH THESE THINGS!
i’m running on PC and i’m getting this problem that can’t do anything.
I have tried to run tinyUmbrella and it can’t run TSS, it shows:
something is wrong.
You don’t have admin privileges or
you have something running on port 80 or
……
Do you how i can run to make it work?
Hi Joe,
I exactly experienced the same as you did. Luckily, I found the solution and solved it!
Find it on this link: techreviews.in/port-80-unavailable-step-by-step-guide-to-release-port-80-and-make-it-available-for-apache-server/
Hey Souk, You are the man…. thanks alot for the link… it wasnt you i still cant figure out what is making it like that…
Thanks to DK Zone too… Makes life alot easier…
appreciated….

What nobody said is that you loose everything in your iPhone, Cyndia, etc.. etc… etc…, now trying to restore whatever possible from backup.
Jailbreak it, restoring from backup… Sync and everything comes back to the place it was before. Well almost everything…except sbsetting and I can’t install it neighter, it says ***.bigboss.com host unreacheable.
what if my iPhone 4 is still in iOS 4.0.2 but already has modem firmware 2.10.04?
please help me without GSM carrier my iPhone is pretty much more like a useless iPod Touch now
@REPLY ASAP PLEASE!
It doens’t matter on what firmware your iPhone 4 is on. Unlock pertains to the baseband, and currently there is no unlock for 2.10.04.
Don’t worry. Soon after iOS 4.2 is out, we are expecting the iPhone Dev Team to release the unlock for iPhone 4.

My Iphone 4 is updated to version 4.1 and baseband 02.10.04. Is there any way to unlock it or reverse the baseband?
My Iphone 4 is updated to version 4.1 and baseband 02.10.04. Is there any way to unlock it or reverse the baseband?
I have a 3gs with version 4.0.1 and baseband 5.13.04. Is it possible to update to 4.1, jailbreak and unlock my device without updating my baseband?
BEFORE POSTING A QUESTION AT LEAST READ THE TITLE OF THIS ARTICLE!!!
ALSO READ THE COMMENTS! DONT ASK THE SAME STUFF OVER AND OVER AGAIN
@Otep, NO, the title of this post says iPHONE 4!!! but you can use PwnageTool, which works for 3g, 3gs, iphone 4… google it or look it up on youtube you should be able to find a tutorial
I have an iphone 4 with baseband 2.10.4 running 4.1 iOS. Is it possible to revert the baseband and downgrade the iOS?
can you use this method to update an iphone 3g from 4.0.1 to 4.1 and still preserve its 5.13.04 baseband?
Hi all,
I have understood that it will not change the baseband (tks to tinyumbrella) after the steps mentionned above and what should I use to JB my iphone 4g (actually in 4.0.1) when it will be in 4.1?
I need to use ultrasn0w though.
So if I jailbreak with limerain, is it going to change my baseband?
Tks
@ND
If you preserve your baseband on iPhone 4 using the above method, then you can go ahead and jailbreak it with Limera1n.
Later you unlock with Ultrasn0w.
well it does not look good, had error 3002 and 20000 (?) in itunes
now its stuck at preparing the iphone for restore for at least 5 mns
any advice?
here is a video tutorial: “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6dAHvBtnrc”
